Expert Insights from Dr Elizabeth Hawkes
Despite reservations around eye creams, with many questioning if they are even important in a routine consultant ophthalmic and oculoplastic surgeon Dr Elizabeth Hawkes is pro-eye cream and says they are a crucial component of any comprehensive skincare routine. Hawkes explains, 'The skin around your eyes is unique and is one of the first places to show the signs of ageing as it is so fragile; it needs a bit of extra TLC that face creams just won’t provide as skin around the eyes is thinner compared to skin on other areas of your face and body.'
Dr Hawkes adds, the skin has less sebaceous glands than the rest of the face and therefore requires more hydration. It also has larger corneocytes with slower turnover of skin and therefore more prone to developing milia. With that in mind, Dr Hawkes says, 'Eye creams can help to target areas of concern around the eye area including pigmentation, dehydration and dullness to rejuvenate and replenish hydration and brighten the eye area.'
Our team has tried and tested a range of different eye creams for the last three months, all on different skin conditions to assess if the products actually made a difference to a variety of skin tones and textures. We also spoke to Dr Elizabeth Hawkes as well as skin experts Dr Raj Arora and Dr Anita Sturnham to validate our understanding of the eye area and its specific requirements in terms the of ingredients needed to remedy concerns, and have formed a benchmark against which each product could be measured.
